PT Marga Mandalasakti ("the Company") was established on 4 October 1989 in Jakarta and started its commercial operation on 1 April 1990. As a member of Astra Group, in February 2017, the Company rolled out its new brand name ASTRA Infra Toll Road Tangerang-Merak (ASTRA Tol Tamer). The Company operates the 72.45-km-long Tangerang-Merak Toll Road, which connects West Tangerang and Merak, the further west of the Island of Java. The toll road passes through 3 cities – Tangerang, Serang, and Cilegon.
The Tangerang-Merak Toll Road was built in phases from 1992 to 1996 under the build, operate, and transfer (BOT) scheme. The Company is in charge of the toll road’s construction, operation, and maintenance.
The Company’s major shareholder, with a 79.3 % controlling interest, is PT Astratel Nusantara – underwent a name change to PT Astra Tol Nusantara (ATN) on 18 January 2018, a subsidiary of PT Astra International Tbk that runs infrastructure business. The rest of the shares belong to Capital Holding Investment ltd. with 15.69 %, PT Jasamarga (Persero) Tbk. with 1.94%, PT Hanurata 1.42%, Krakatau Steel (Persero) 0.47%, PT Taspen (Persero) 0.45%, BPJS Ketenagakerjaan (Indonesia’s Workers’ Social Security Agency) 0.45%, and Yayasan Sarana Wana Jaya 0.27%.
The Tangerang-Merak Toll Road has 10 tollgates – Cikupa, East Balaraja, West Balaraja, Cikande, Ciujung, East Serang, West Serang, East Cilegon, West Cilegon, and Merak Tollgates. These tollgates boast 89 transaction lanes, 21 of which are automated tollbooths. Support services available to toll road users include 5 ambulances, 5 traffic services vehicles, 14 tow trucks, 2 rescue vans and 1 rescue truck, and 2 manlifts. In order to keep road users updated with the latest information, until 2017 the Company has installed 21 variable message signs (VMS) and 134 traffic monitoring cameras along the toll road as well as 1,666 street lights and 77 warning lights. Rest & Service Areas are available at KM markers 68 and 43 towards Merak, and at KM markers 68 and 45 towards Jakarta.
